Trade unions ask government and Riigikogu how sickness and unemployment funds are used

29.11.2017

Today, the Estonian Maritime Safety Association (EMSA) sent an open letter to the Government of the Republic and the Riigikogu seeking clarification on the misuse of social security funds.

According to the president of the Independent Seamen's Union, Jüri Lember, the government has no right to use the social security funds for other purposes: "We want to know what the government used the unemployment and sickness funds mentioned by the State Audit Office for. We do not think it is right that employees and employers, who contribute large sums of money every day to these funds, do not know what they are being used for," the letter says.

In addition to the Independent Seamen's Trade Union, the letter was signed by the Estonian Central Trade Union Union Confederation and 12 other trade unions: the Service and Trade Union, the Communication and Service Workers' Union, the Energy Workers' Union, the Education Workers' Union, the Union of State and Local Government Employees, the Drivers' Union, the Transport and Road Transport Workers' Union, the Federation of Industrial Workers' Unions, the Health Workers' Union, the Nurses' Union, the Education Workers' Union and the Trade Union of Education Workers.
